Probation Matters

One of the goals of the Upward Bound program is to enable students to acquire the skills necessary to become a model college student.  Thus, students in the program are expected to earn the grades and practice behaviors that are reflective of such a student.  Continuous low grades and inappropriate behaviors will not be tolerated.  Students may be placed on probation if they

  • Fail to meet GPA requirements

  • Fail to meet attendance requirements

  • Fail to meet assignment deadlines

Students will remain on probation until the situation is rectified or until he or she is dismissed from the program.  During this time, students do not receive stipend, are not allowed to go on special field trips, and risk being dismissed from the program.

Students with behavior issues at their respective schools also run the risk of being placed on probation or being dismissed from the program as well.

Stipend - Incentive & Reward

Upward Bound provides an incentive for students to attend school and Saturday meetings in the form of a monetary allowance for participation.  Participation includes following guidelines set in the grading and attendance policies, fulfilling all responsibilities agreed to in the student contract, and maintaining personal responsibility and stewardship.

Stipend is distributed at monthly Saturday meetings only.   Because we rely on attendance to sustain our program, there are consequences due to not meeting these expectations.  If a student is absent (unexcused) from a Saturday meeting, then the student will forfeit the previous month’s stipend.  If the student is absent due to an approved school function, then the student may pick up his or her stipend the week following the Saturday meeting.

Stipend rates are $7.00 for each school visit and $12.00 for each Saturday meeting
