Welcome to Union College Upward Bound! Upward Bound has been a part of Union College since 1980. Serving 75 students annually, Union College's Upward Bound program is a Classic Upward Bound program that is designed to give participants a taste of college while providing the support services necessary to be successful in high school. Union College's Classic Upward Bound program serves the following seven high schools: Barbourville Independent High School; Clay County High School; Knox Central High School; Leslie County High School; Lynn Camp High School; Owsley County High School; and Red Bird High School.
What is Classic Upward Bound? An original part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, given further authorization by the Higher Education Act of 1965, Classic Upward Bound was created to help low income and/or potential first generation college students overcome existing class and social barriers while preparing to go from high school to higher education.
Part of what has come to be known as the Federal TRiO Programs, Upward Bound's objective is to ready participants for success in postsecondary education by offering the student a host of services - from career counseling to college scholarship research. The focus is on the individual: Advisors develop a custom plan for each participant specifically designed to help him or her reach his maximum potential. Project services include both an Academic Year component and a Summer Component. The Summer Component has just finished up - ending on July 3rd when participants and staff returned from a four day trip to Atlanta, Georgia. Upward Bound is funded by a $347,563 grant from the United States Department of Education.
