Topic Discussion

2 areas of known weakness – key competencies and assessment

Final topic:

            Improving Key Competencies

With sub-components of instructional strategies and advisement/follow-up

Reason for limiting:  controllable amount of assessment and time constraints

Key Competencies

· Is this the term we should use?  Basic skills is more to the point

· Term is from UC catalog – addresses the mission

· Read, Write, Math

· Include:

Basic Skills Placement test

·  Compass - $450/year site license and $1500 for all three (math, rdg, wtg) for 200 students

·  Why do placement tests if we don’t have follow-up services or classes available?

·  If criterion is set and students don’t make it – is there a learning disability or do they not have the skills?

Student Engagement – need to give Higher Education definition of term so all understand the term

Bring to next meeting:

· Information on basic skills assessment

· List of all tests/assessment currently used on campus

· General Education/major assessment information from Ella Hensley

· Ideas on how to implement

Consultant will be on campus on June 20-21
