Welcome
to the Department of English, Communication, and Modern Languages at Union
College. Here you will find information about who we are, what we do, and what
majors in English and communication involve.
Our majors integrate study of literature, media, and theory to promote informed reading of
all kinds of texts, whether Shakespeare plays, Wordsworth poems, Thoreau's Walden,
a Harry Potter book, a 6 o'clock newscast, or the Star Wars saga. Majors
in English and communication are excellent preparation
for careers in a variety
of fields, including
teaching, business and
industry, public relations, and
journalism; the English major also provides a solid foundation for graduate study.
The Mass Communication
major is designed for students interested in entering mass
media fields; the English major is recommended as preparation for teaching or further
degrees in English. Students majoring in other fields may find the English/Communication
minor to be a useful complement. And prospective high school English
teachers will build both their skills and their knowledge base in the secondary
education program.
