During the week immediately following Union
College's Commencement, all first-year Bonners are required to attend a
service trip. The purpose of the Bonner First-Year Service Trip is
to visit a community different from the college's local community, to
learn about its issues, and to serve there.
For the past four years, we have developed a
relationship with Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) in Asheville, North
Carolina. For one week in May, we work with MHO to prepare for their
annual Ramp Festival, concluding with an all-day build of 10 wheelchair
ramps simultaneously. This service experience gives us the
opportunity to examine urban housing issues and to compare and contrast
the experience with our own Repair Affair program.
