Recognizing that literacy
education is a major social issue in Knox County, Bonner Scholar alum Misty
Shepherd recycled an idea from her travel to New York City to create the
Timeless Tales Reading Center.
The center, created in 1999, is located
on-campus. Student coordinators work with 16 tutors from the college who
volunteer two hours Monday-Thursday to work with local children
on their reading skills and other subjects. Students are recommended by parents and teachers for tutoring.
Timeless Tales Reading Center is funded primarily by
the Bonner Scholars Program, though the Barbourville Junior Woman's Study
Club donated $2000 in 2006 toward the purchase of new books and tutoring
aids. The program is housed by the generosity of Union College in the
Weeks-Townsend Memorial Library.
The reading center operates during the academic year,
Monday-Thursday 3:30-5:30pm.
